On 13 July, within the framework of the 2nd Social Tourism Day, the President of ISTO Americas went to the state of Guanajuato in Mexico to participate in this event.
The Social Tourism Day, with the theme “Access to travel for seniors”, brought together different organisations such as the Secretaría de Turismo de Guanajuato (SECTUR Guanajuato), le Sistema para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia (DIF), Adventure Travel Mexico (ATMEX), Instituto Iberoamericano de Turismo Inclusivo (IITI) and ISTO Americas, represented by its President Sergio Rodríguez Abitia, in order to highlight the importance for this segment of the population to have access to holidays and tourism.
After a survey on tourism in the state of Guanajuato and a census of the number of seniors in the region and their needs, SECTUR Guanajuato prepared, based on the expertise of each of the representatives present, a comprehensive programme aimed at transforming the tourist sites of the state of Guanajuato into accessible spaces for seniors.
The Secretaría de Turismo de Guanajuato provided training to more than 70 service providers. All of them understood the need to adapt their spaces to allow the inclusion of this category of the population, which until then had only limited access to tourism.
