Americas.

ISTO Americas.

ISTO was first introduced to the Americas in 1994 and the section was legally established in 1996. It is tasked with the promotion and development of fair and sustainable tourism for all in South America, Central America, the Caribbean and North America.

Social tourism is, today more than ever, a principle and a solution for a global society burdened with bad tourism practices that destroy the environment, culture and society and that turn against humanity itself. The current challenge is a revival of the sector, which requires a reconversion: less tourism development and more development tourism.

If there is one thing that this international week of reflection and exchange has left us with, it is the conviction that something is finally changing, that more and more of us are raising our voices for the implementation or continuation of sustainable practices with the communities and the territory, but, above all, that more and more of us are putting people at the centre of our activity.

Working groups.

ISTO members in the Americas worked together with its Board on the "ISTO Americas Action Plan 2019 - 2021". A discussion by members in groups, and subsequently shared in plenary, on four main areas including: membership; training; ISTO events and social, economic, cultural and environmental indicators will guide the work of this section.

Projects.

One of the main projects ISTO Americas is currently working on the collaboration with SITCA.

Collaboration ISTO-SITCA

The achievement of sustainable and social tourism is a process that must have a multidisciplinary and multi-sectorial vision; to this end, the Sustainable & Social Tourism Summit, together with ISTO, developed the Diploma in Training of Professionals in Sustainable and Social Tourism, to consolidate training and cooperation between specialists in the sector, within the framework of the Integrated Management of the Reef Watershed (MAR2R) project.

The section offers several activities, including CafecISTO, webinars offered by ISTO to all its members and to the tourism sector in general around the world. Discover all the recordings here.
