Tepoztlán is a municipality in Mexico whose foundation dates back approximately to the year 1100 A.D. It has a population of 54,987 inhabitants (Economy, 2020) and a territorial area of 242.464 km². Its biodiversity is developed around the Chichinautzin Biological Corridor, where the protected natural area of El Tepozteco National Park (24,000 ha) is located. In its territorial and sociocultural organization, the municipality is structured around eight neighborhoods (La Santísima Trinidad, San Miguel, Santo Domingo, Los Reyes, San José, San Sebastián, Santa Cruz and San Pedro), as well as ten indigenous communities (Amatlán de Quetzalcoatl, Colonia Ángel Bocanegra, Huilotepec, Ixcatepec, San Andrés de la Cal, San Juan Tlacotenco, Santa Catarina, Santiago Tepetlapa, Santo Domingo Ocotitlán and Tepoztlán, the municipal seat).

In 2002, the Municipality of Tepoztlán was incorporated into the National Tourism Program “Pueblos Mágicos”, a program created to promote national tourism, distinct from beach tourism. This designation was granted due to its vernacular architectural characteristics, dry-stone walls (tecorrales) and cobblestone streets, its unique orography, cultural richness and history reflected in the Ex-Dominican Convent, built around 1570, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994; as well as the El Tepozteco Archaeological Zone, a site built 800 years ago by the Xochimilcas, used for ceremonial purposes in the worship of the God of Pulque Ometochtli (“two rabbits”), where major pilgrimages associated with plant fertility and winds arrived; it is the most visited archaeological site in the State of Morelos and the 13th most visited archaeological site nationwide.

Currently, like other highly frequented tourist destinations worldwide, Tepoztlán is seeking a point of balance where economic activity and the use of its resources for tourism purposes can go hand in hand with sustainability through the proper implementation of public policy in favor of a better quality of life for its inhabitants, with a direct impact on the overall condition of the Municipality, in order to be visited by the average 5,000 visitors it receives every weekend.
