Territory and Governance for Sustainable Rural Tourism in Latin America

Territory and Governance for Sustainable Rural Tourism in Latin America.

Inclusion

Peru

This webinar, organised by TerraOrigen as part of the 7th ISTO International Week, is based on a specific premise: the majority of tourism resources in Latin America and the Caribbean are located in rural areas, yet the activities carried out there operate in a fragmented and isolated manner.

Beyond the lack of infrastructure or training, the problem is structural, as years of mistrust between stakeholders have prevented the formation of partnerships, and without such partnerships, the governance needed to manage the territory as a system does not emerge.

The result is that rural tourism initiatives are not sustainable over time, the economic benefits do not reach the local population, and unregulated growth ends up degrading the natural resource from which they originate.

Roosbel Taipe, as a member of ISTO, proposes discussing why the territorial approach is not merely a methodological option, but the structural condition required to reverse this cycle.
