On January 26, within the scope of FITUR 2024, a breakfast was organized in Madrid to present the long-awaited World Congress of Social Tourism which will take place in San Jose, Costa Rica, from 23 to 25 October 2024. The invitation to this remarkable international event was extended by the Costa Rican Minister of Tourism, William Rodríguez.
This breakfast was attended by various distinguished personalities of the tourism sector. The event was animated by Verónica Gómez, Director of the Americas section of the International Social Tourism Organisation (ISTO), and began with a few words from Sergio Rodríguez Abitia, the President of ISTO Americas, who thanked the Costa Rican Institute for Tourism for its hospitality and the members and partners of ISTO for their presence. The President of ISTO, Isabel Novoa, followed with a speech highlighting the strong commitment and leadership of Costa Rica on the path towards a fair, socially responsible and sustainable tourism which was on display when the country applied for hosting this major World Congress. These expressions of thanks and acknowledgements were followed by the Minister of Tourism of Costa Rica, who took the stage to comment on the public policies that this country is developing to achieve true inclusion for all in tourism. Around 50 people were present at the event, representing various ministries of tourism, mostly American and European ones. Representatives of several local and regional public authorities on tourism also attended the event, which are members of ISTO.
During the event, which lasted for approximately two hours, key aspects of the World Congress were discussed as it will be a crucial international meeting place for leaders, innovators, experts and professionals of social, fair and sustainable tourism. The objective of this initiative is to encourage the exchange of knowledge, collaboration and inspiration in the tourism sector, with emphasis on the relevance of socially sustainable practices. The dynamic city of San José is getting ready to be the stage of this event in October 2024, offering a unique platform for reflecting on the most recent trends and the best practices to implement in the sector on a global scale.
